What the columns mean

A planet is retrograde when it appears from Earth to move backward through the zodiac. Nothing about the planet changes; the apparent reversal comes from the two orbits passing each other. The moment the motion reverses is called a station, and the degree it happens at is given under each date.

The shadow periods are the stretches either side when the planet is covering the same degrees it will retrace, or has already retraced. Astrologers watch them because the themes of a retrograde often show up first in the pre-shadow and are not finished until the post-shadow closes.
